Former Prime Minister of India and Economist Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away today at the age of 92.  He was a leader who gained respect not only in India but all over the world for his wisdom, simplicity, and playing an important role in the economic development of the country.


Born on September 26, 1932 in Gaon Gah, present day Pakistan, Manmohan Singh studied at famous universities like Cambridge and Oxford.  He was a brilliant economist who initiated economic reforms as the finance minister in 1991 during India's worst financial crisis.  His policies liberalized the Indian economy and made it one of the fastest growing economies in the world.


Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.  During his leadership, India launched several important projects for economic development, infrastructure development, and social welfare.  In particular, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Indo-US nuclear agreement were major milestones of his tenure.


On the news of his death, political leaders from all over the world, including India, have expressed deep grief and sorrow.  Several personalities, including Indian President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, described her death as a great loss for India.  "Dr. Manmohan Singh's leadership and economic vision will always be remembered. He was a great leader and a compassionate person," said Prime Minister Modi.


Dr. Manmohan Singh will always be remembered for his modesty, simplicity, and public service.  His leadership introduced India as a strong economic power on the world stage.


 The government has declared seven days of national mourning for his death, and flags will fly at half-mast across the country.  Dr. Singh will be cremated with state honors.


 India today bids farewell to a great leader whose life is a beacon for the youth of the country.  His legacy is a worthy example for future leaders.
